The highway glows softly from light snowfall,
flakes tumble down aimlessly from heaven,
tossed lightly about by the wind
melting on the dark, icy pavement
near a black sedan with tinted windows
Which sputters gradually to a halt.
Dark boots belong to a man in a long coat
and a wide brimmed hat.
He'd be perfectly invisible
if not for the dim moonlight,
pale beams absorbed by his ebon garb,
illuminating the road below.
The man reaches into the folds of his coat,
past his pen and his pocket knife
for his battered pack of Marlboros.
There's a brief flicker of light
obscured by the man's glov
